France 2018

If you look for excellent food and a beautiful nature, what is better than going to France? This year our ambition is to explore Normandy in North France. We start our tour with a night on Mont Vully in Switzerland, a mountain overlooking Lake Murten and Lake Neuenburg.  Such a beautiful sunset and sunrise.

We pass the French Jura mountains and head to Beaune, the heart of the Burgundy wine region. Overnight stop is in Nevers at the river Loire.

Now our way goes along the river Loire and its canals up to Orleans. It is not the part of the river Loire famous for its epic castles (this part starts after Orleans), so we enjoy only very few traffic and nice little villages. We visit Sancerre, famous for its Sauvignon Blanc wine, and watch the relaxing atmosphere on the canal.

After visiting St.Benoit abbey, we find a nice overnight spot in Jargeau at the river Loire.

Next stop is Falaise with its huge castle, where William the Conqueror was borne 1000 years ago. Falaise is already in Normandy so we had the chance to test the first of the 3 famous C's (camembert, calvados, cidre). France is such a food paradise. Falaise is also a place with a lot of WWII history.

Now we reach the coast. We find the top spot right above Omaha beach to park our Mercedes Vario, to enjoy the views and to discover the WWII history of that region. There are so many WWII museums and locations to discover. For us it was a must to see this region once in our life.

Driving the coast north to Calais, we discover so many beautiful villages, food markets, beaches and sightseeings that we could easily spend weeks here.

One of our favourite places along the coast is the mouth of the river Somme leading into the Atlantic ocean. It is such a natural paradise, where you can see birds, seals and again lots of WWII history. The landscape is changing dramatically with the tide coming and going so its fascinating to watch the nature.

Our route back to Switzerland leads us to Dinant in Belgium and then following the river Maas to Verdun.

Finally we reach Saverne in Alsace, where we do a 2-days offroad training with our Benny. If you like, watch our Youtube video for that.

Total km driven during our Normandy tour: 2'700.
